What Makes an RPG?

Traditionally RPGs let players control one or more characters. These characters are usually called units or party members. These characters are the vessels the player uses to interact with the world.
Customization
Typically, the gameplay features elements that can be customized such as appearance, cosmetics, and in most cases, stats that give the player and their respective party members advantages in the minute-to-minute gameplay.
Combat
Combat is determined by the type of system the game developers have decided to incorporate. This is where genre comes into play. The most tired and true version of combat is a turn-based system, but many utilize real-time actions similar to action games. Regardless, there’s an element of strategy that goes into these games to determine the outcome of an enemy encounter
